Karen Magill has had many dreams in her life but somehow they have always led back to writing. Perhaps that is because her paternal grandmother, Katherine Magill, was a published author. Or perhaps that is because Karen has always had a vivid imagination and spent many hours as a child living in a fantasy world. Even now she often retreats into her fantasy world – not only to write but also for relief from life.
Throughout her life, Ms. Magill has had numerous articles and poems published. An interesting escapade in her writing life began with a Poison concert. Karen wrote a review of it that an ex boyfriend happened to show to an editor of a paper aimed at high school students. The editor published the review and Karen began writing a monthly column entitled ‘Rock Notes’ for ‘High School Rage’ along with conducting the occasional interview and reviewing concerts. A disagreement with the editor led to Karen starting her own production.
Based in Calgary, ‘Rock Raff’ was a weekly newsletter that Karen edited, produced and primarily wrote. It consisted of reviews of concerts and product, interviews and editorials. ‘Rock Raff’ featured musicians of many genres – everything from country rock to grunge. Some were garage bands that never made it out of the garage and others were multi platinum selling artists. Ms. Magill and her fellow writers had the opportunity to speak to many talented people for the two years that ‘Rock Raff’ was in production.
When Karen was disabled by multiple sclerosis in 2000, she was faced with a future that could have been bleak but she turned to her writing. She started focusing on her writing and in 2004 self-published her first book ‘The Bond, A Paranormal Love Story’. ISBN: 1411615026. ‘The Bond’ has been nominated for an award, sold reasonably well and has been a great learning experience on the world of self-publishing.
In 2006, Karen self-published her second book ‘Let Us Play, A Rock ‘n Roll Love Story’. ISBN: 9781847285195.
